John Walker

John Walker (born 1939) trained at Birmingham College of Art in 1956-60, in his final year winning the Arts Council Drawing Prize. In the 1960s, 70s and 80s, Walker had numerous solo exhibitions in cities including London, Paris, New York, Amsterdam, and Hamburg. He was in the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1972, and in1985 there was a retrospective of his paintings at the Hayward Gallery, London, and a retrospective of his prints at the Tate Gallery, London. Most recently, he has been Professor of Painting at Boston University. He was shortlisted primarily for works in which he explored ways to make images that were not representational but which somehow conveyed the drama of painting. His work is in numerous public collections worldwide including The Tate, V&A Museum, MOMA (New York) and the Art Gallery of New South Wales (Australia).
